“The iPod scene” debate

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

“I have always felt that it is important that we find humor in (the things about) which we are most sensitive. It is through comedy that we can begin conversation instead of hiding behind political correctness – a wall that simply divides people and stifles communication.”

- “Juno” director, Jason Reitman

I like the discussion swirling about this aspect “Juno” & its comedy and feel it applies to much of the humor which we are including in The Laughing Planet. Surely some people will find that our brand of casting levity upon life “over the top”, I don’t think we approach the low-brow extremes used by “Borat” or even “Knocked Up”. But do brace yourselves for some political INcorrectness for the sake of a good chortle.

Screening #1 of “The Laughing Planet” is complete.

The kind folks who showed up and endured the pressure of having 2 of the creative triumvirate in the room with them actually seemed to also enjoy themselves. Audio levels with more spikes than an 80’s punk rock hairdo notwithstanding.

The verdict? We aren’t finished just yet. We of course knew this going in. But now we have a slightly better idea about which direction we need to go before this little video project can be shown to a larger audience without a chorus of “boos” and “Zzz” (”BOO-Ze”?) drowning out the jokes. (more…)

Damn, that Ham is the MAN!

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

OK, I am getting totally jazzed about this little movie thing. After months AND months of long, hard days in front of computers, this thing really looks like something. Now it’s really starting to SOUND like something too. For the initial screening, we are “borrowing” music until we have formalized everything. But suddenly we have begun to receive the first waves of production from our young musical prodigy Hamilton Cleverdon. What an huge boost in quality, production value, and excellence original music adds. And not just any music. Badass jams. Creative genius. Tremendous dynamism. bathing-elephants.mp3

This aspect of “The Laughing Planet” will surprise you people. Sure, we plunge deepest depths of comedy fodder. But we have a heart and a message. Ham’s work brings out the best in what we are doing without detracting from the relentless blabbing I tend be doing on screen. Take a look/listen on his website to whet your whistle. You must acknowledge the fine work that has begun to take us to the next level. You go, Ham!

No joke. Even Beelzebub likes The Laughing Planet! This is what big brother Google Analytics tells me today. March 16th’s 55 blog pageviews made the monthly total (for my blog only) 666 since we started receiving data. Another fun stat is the countries who have visited the TLP website in its nascent state. I’d venture to say we’ve had at least one from nearly half the countries on Earth, including Iran, Guadeloupe, Qatar, Bolivia, Morocco, Bosnia and Herzegovina, United Arab Emirates, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica, Croatia, and Tunisia. Hey, it’s been too long since my last Top 5 list!
