Friday on my mind

Friday, July 25th, 2008

It’s been a wacky couple months, but things just may be happening…er…finally.

Our sound engineer was poached by the network that stole his show’s idea. Fortunately for him the new show is with a major network and was the #2 rated TV program last week. UNfortunately for TLP, this means his availability was suddenly diminished, but we just may still get some sound mixing magic out of him. Is today the day?

I was recently contacted by an old friend from high school who works for a major Spanish film studio, Morena Films, and might pursue our international options before we even nail down our domestic strategy. ALso, my potential cameraman is in Colombia right now and might have found interested parties in the biz from Argentina. Is this the week TLP goes global?

And finally, after slaving away (yes, literally, i.e., for no money whatsoever) on TLP for nearly a year straight, I might learn of work that pays real money up in the Pacific NW for my old pal Window King. Is today the day I find out if I might begin the slog from red to black ink?

This is one of those GDIF kinda days for me. Lots of pins & needles. Fortunately I have plenty of distractions in the world of politics on The Daily Kos to keep my mind occupied. Plus, this video of my grandma.

Three Cups of Tea: Another way to save the planet

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I am nearly finished reading Three Cups of Tea, and would suggest to you all to pick up a copy and learn why it has become such a sensation.

The man who made it all happen A great man & some of his thousands of children will be in Sacramento in Sept. for those living near our editing hub.

This column by Kristoff in the NY Times highlights much of what the Central Asia Institute, or CAI, has done in just under a decade.

Solar highrises?

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Proving once again that necessity is the mother of innovation, it seems that real progress is coming about in the evolution (or is it intelligent design?) of alternative fuels.
This new article from the BBC introduces technology that could be implemented within 3 years & vastly increases photovoltaic efficiency.

Solar panels aren’t just for deserts anymore If Germany, a country that is not quite as sunny as most of this land of ours, can be a world leader in solar power, what is stopping us? Oh yeah. The lack of action by our leaders in Washington. The only action taken on solar power since the 70s is when Ronald Reagan removed the solar panels from the White House that Jimmy Carter had installed.

Will Australia & other forward-thinking nations leave us behind as our Drill & Bore mindset gets us deeper in the pockets of the last remaining rogue nations which have the light sweet crude to satisfy our light crude sweet tooth?

Update:
Looks like some US companies are getting the news the solar power is a good thing and can help attract business. Check the comments below for the link to this NY times artice.

It doesn’t suck to be me. While the valley is choked by 100+ degree heat and smoke from countless wildfires, I get to spend my time in a place like this.

Tahoe is awesome. But duty calls. Camp Obama this weekend.

Hardware: Better late than never

Sure my streak of nearly 2 years without finishing out of the money in a PDGA event has become a streak of 3 straight tourneys OUT OF the money. But at least this weekend I did get a trophy. Albeit one that I earned last October (read original post & see my mug in the newspaper HERE ).

Money for nothin’

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

On my respite from the 100+ degree heat in Sacto, I have been enjoying the local disc golf course in Tahoe on a regular basis in preparation for my next tourney. As I approached the first hole I stumbled upon a family from SoCal who came up to Lake Tahoe prepared to play “frisbee golf” for the 1st time. They had the requisite beach frisbees all loaded into a bag, one for each player. Fortunately, they had also bought actual golf discs and had enough so that each of them could throw their own drivers.

Frisbee fun for the whole family

I couldn’t resist offering to “show them the course” as it’s not especially beginner-friendly or well-marked. In essence, I had volunteered to act as their “golf pro” for their foray in the world of golf without balls, carts, and environmental devastation from the clear-cutting of forests and subsequent planting of evil grasses that must then be shorn and chemically fertilized indefinitely.
